03/06/2011
This video is from our last spearfishing trip, taken by our frieend Italian spearfisherman Daniele Marino with his Go Pro HD Hero camera, which was mounted to his speargun.
These small cameras are just awesome with their fish eye, wide angle lens being perfect for taking underwater footage! The video edited by Alexey with Pinacle 15 HD software suite.
On the day of shooting- the sea was really calm, with good visibillity, no current at all, maybe because of that we didn’t see a big fish , but we found a couple nice new spots! And practice on small rabbit fish (with their spikes being a bit poisonous, we were careful with them), and they taste real good!
Later, in deeper waters of 10-15 meters we found some bigger sweetlips! Which taste even better!
We hope our next trip, current will be stronger and will find some bigger fish!
Join us on our next spearfishing trip!

30/05/2011
Following a tip-off from a cook, an expat dive instructor and equipment provider in Rawai believes a Thai employee may have stolen 30 diving tanks worth 180,000 baht.
German national Armin Rudloff, 43, filed a report at Chalong police station yesterday morning.
He told police that earlier yesterday he had discovered the tanks missing from an equipment storage room located near the Ao Sa-ne Bungalow at Ao Sa-ne (‘Charming Bay’), near Nai Harn beach.
The 12 liter tanks cost 6,000 baht a piece, he added.
Citing an eye witness account, Mr Rudloff suspects his employee, 52 year old Narong ‘Lek’ Saeong, as the culprit.
“A restaurant cook [next door to the storage room] says she saw Lek take the tanks last Thursday, one by one, on a motorbike.
“But she didn’t suspect anything as she thought I had asked him to do that,” Mr Rudloff told reporters at the police station.
After talking to the cook, the victim says he located Lek nearby and confronted him.
“When I asked him whether he stole my tanks, he denied it. He was speaking to me with shaking hands and voice. Then he got on my motorbike and drove away with it,” he said.
“The motorbike is a rental which I was planning to buy soon,” he explained.
“Lek has worked for me for two years, so I trusted him,” he added.
Mr Rudloff said his business, Freelance Associate Phuket Company, has been operating since 2000. He has lived in Phuket since 1999.
His company office is on Viset Road in Rawai.
He said he was renting out the diving tanks for 150 baht each per day.
“I will lose about 30,000 baht a month if I don’t get my diving tanks back,” he said.
There may be some hope for that as most of the tanks have identifying numbers on them, the victim noted.
Chalong police duty officer Tanan Petnarong told reporters that he would coordinate with Phuket City police to locate Mr Lek, whose ID Card address is in Phuket Town.

28/05/2011
Pattaya Diving and Fishing heading out of Bali Hai Pier fearing the worst, a storm was rolling in from over the Pattaya Far Islands on route to Sattahip and the Petchburi Bremen. The customers on board including Gary Smektala, an IDC staff instructor on leave from his present assignment in Afghanistan, Mohammed, Bandar & Fayez from Kuwait, taking an introduction to diving by doing the discover scuba diving experience took cover in the forward cabin, leaving Wayne & Mat to weather the storm. Twenty minutes later to our suprise the storm cleared to near perfect conditions at the back of Koh Khram. With the currents been perfect we had an idea this was going to be a good day for allArriving at the Petchburi Bremen a shot line was deployed in the direction of the wreck and after ten minutes of trawling snagged on the wreck. Wayne dropped down the line to check the position and tie on and came back to the surface with a smile on his face. Slack water and fifteen metre visibility it was! Upon taking an updated GPS mark, Gary and Mat dropped in the water while the boat headed to Koh Ira with Wayne and the DSD’s.
Descending down the line the visibility was amazing and it was evident that nobody had been diving on the wreck for some time as the marine life was abundant. Large shoals of fusilier and yellow snapper were the first thing that we encountered as we closed in on the wreck. Heading towards the bow we encountered a large number of bat fish over inquisitive as to the dive lights and then in the corner of our eyes a flash! Not one but three giant trevelly inside the wreck! Circumnavigating the wreck the abudnace of marine life continued until we reached 5 minutes no decompression limit and headed towards the line. Out of the blue a shape appeared and closed in! What was it? A two meter long marble rays swam towards us then with us back towards the line. What a dive! Gary and Mat ascended and did their safety stop, with the boat arriving back to pick them up, we headed to Koh Ira for lunch.
The second dive was a continuation of the same with the marble ray now resting in the midships cabins another remarkable dive was enjoyed. After removing the shot line and ascending Gary & Mat boarded the boat to be met by Wayne & the DSD’s with beaming smiles. We then headed back to Bali Hai Pier with a good day had by all.
The only down side was that our GoPro camera battery had not recharged so we have no video or pictures to share. But we will not make the same mistake again on our next trip on the 10th June.

25/05/2011In their latest training bulletin PADI anounced the publication of a distinctive specialty course instructor guide for a self-reliant (solo) diver speciality course.
The purpose of the Self-Reliant Diver specialty course is to recognize and accept the role of the buddy system and its contributions to diver safety while identifying and developing self-reliance and independence while diving. There are two reasons for an experienced diver to take the Self-Reliant diver course:
• To develop the skills of planning and carrying out dives without a partner when preferred or necessary.
• To sharpen skills of diving self-reliance, making the diver a stronger partner in a dive pair or team.
This course covers when diving alone may be applicable, and the need to compensate for those situations, including dive planning, life support system readiness, adaptive training, equipment and responsibility. This course is an introduction to self-reliant diving that helps student divers develop the skills, knowledge and techniques necessary to rely on themselves first, whether or not they are diving with a partner, including:
• The value and application of the buddy system.
• The philosophy of, and motivation for, diving without a partner.
• Potential risks of diving alone, and how to manage those risks.
• The value of equipment redundancy and what back-up equipment is needed.
• Dive planning and gas management.
Prerequistites
To qualify for the Self-Reliant Diver course, an you must:
- Be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or have a qualifying certification from another training organization.
- Have a minimum 100 logged dives.
- Be 18 years of age or older.
- Successfully complete a dive skills assessment by a PADI Self-Reliant Diver Specialty Instructor.
Course Overview
- The course includes three open water dives, which may be conducted on one day.
- The maximum depth for open water dives is 30 metres/100 feet.
- Dives must be conducted within the no decompression limits of the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP) or dive computer.
Equipment Requirements
In addition to your standard dive equipment the following equipment is required to be used:
- Surface marker buoy, such as a delayed surface marker buoy (DSMB) or lift bag with at least 30 metres/100 feet of line.
- Redundant gas source – pony cylinder, twin cylinders with isolation valve or sidemount configuration. Redundant gas supply must be configured so that the diver can access it with one hand.
- Redundant depth gauge and bottom timer, or dive computer.
- Redundant surface signaling devices (both visual and audible)
- Knife/cutting tool
- Slate and pencil
- Back-up mask
As a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT), Solo, TecRec and Cave Diver with in excess of 200 self-reliant dives Mat more than meets the requirements to teach the course and has applied to PADI to do so. We hope to be able to offer this course in the next few months.
